Chateau d'Agel

Here in the heart of the Minervois Region nestles a 12th century castle, with history dating back to the Cathars and Simon de Montfort (If you’ve read Labyrinth, by Kate Mosse, you’ll know what I’m talking about). It was a fortified castle, where the Count of Toulouse resisted the Albigensian crusade.
Martine Ecal-Besse and her husband Jean-Marie have lovingly restored the rooms and grounds, to create the most magnificent place to stay. The castle has been in Martine’s family for generations, and she has worked hard to make it very comfortable and extremely elegant.
There are 5 acres of formal garden and parkland, and a swimming pool. The rooms are beautifully decorated in a period style, and there are wonderful outside areas to take your aperitifs. There’s even an orangery!! You can walk through the pretty village, and hike up to the hills to see panoramic views. It is perfect… a little part of paradise on earth.
Fully catered weeks are available with our expert Peter Shaw as chef and host. This will include gourmet meals throughout the week and all beverages; pick-up and drop-off from an appointed place (airport, train station etc in the region); excursions to local sites in an air-conditioned mini-bus; wine tastings and much more! If you want a Wine Tasting week, Juliet Bruce Jones (Master of Wine) is at your service to take you through the wines of the Languedoc, and you can sample the wines in the original wine cellar of the castle.
