The Difference Between Barging and Barging!
As a child I was taken on several barge holidays, in England and in France. They were self drive barges. I remember great times, cruising through beautiful countryside, running up hills to get milk straight from the farm, cycling along towpaths, being in the out of doors for a week. Great!! It was like luxurious camping. What child could want for more?
My father’s memories are completely different. It wasn’t a holiday for Dad as he had to pilot the barge; worry about the dangers of locks; fill the barge up with water and get rid of the sewage at the right place; make sure we had enough fuel; making sure we got from A to B in one day so we could cycle to the shops to buy food; be a mechanic; and it wasn’t fun for Mum either... coping with a grumpy husband; making up beds every night; cooking; shopping; and making sure the kids weren’t falling in the canal... which of course we did!! What a nightmare!!
